Childhood obesity is cute, but why is adult obesity unattractive?

My young niece is a little fatty, in my eyes as an aunt, she's not that pretty, just a little cute. But she's extremely likable, often attracting a bunch of neighborhood grandmas. This one pats her face, that one grabs her hand, after a series of "fondling," they even want to take my niece home. The most common compliments these grandmas give to my niece are "cute and chubby." While I'm not that fat, at most just a little plump, I'm always being told to lose weight! I really don't understand, since it's all about being fat, why is it cute when kids are fat, but unattractive when we adults are?

After deep reflection, I've summarized a few reasons.

  1. Child fat = healthy, adult fat = unattractive

Don't take what the older generation says as nonsense. They always say that a fat child means the child is growing well, and this actually has some truth to it. Fat produces heat and keeps warm, playing an important role in maintaining the body temperature of infants and toddlers, as well as promoting normal growth and development. Generally, infants and toddlers with higher body fat content also have higher survival rates.

Additionally, a chubby child often brings to mind that they "eat a lot and sleep a lot." To many adults, if a child eats a lot and sleeps a lot, that's considered healthy. Therefore, people tend to associate a child's fatness with health.

However, obesity in adults is more often related to aesthetic aspects. In an aesthetic trend where thinness is valued, people's immediate impression when they see a large, fat person is that they're unattractive, and then they consider the person's health, personality, and other issues.

  2. People forgive their fat because they find them cute

People don't find children cute because they're fat, but they forgive their fat because they find them cute. This principle is somewhat similar to the saying "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." If you find a child cute, then some of their imperfections, such as being fat or mischievous, become endearing.

Cats are the gods of cuteness in the animal kingdom, while pigs are symbols of stupidity. When a cat gets fat, we think it becomes even cuter. When a pig gets fat, lying lazily on the side, we only find it more ugly and lazy. In other words, their cuteness has nothing to do with their weight, but rather with the animal itself. Out of maternal instinct or affection, even if a child is fat, people tend to favor them and find them cute.

  3. Children are small, so even if they're fat, they pose no threat

Among various groups, children are considered harmless. They're still young and don't have strong aggression. Adults have independent thoughts and stronger behavioral abilities, which means they can pose a threat to others. When people see a fat child, they don't feel the need to be on guard and feel comfortable playing with them. However, when a large, fat adult stands in front of them, even if the person doesn't exhibit any threatening behavior, people might unconsciously assess them as someone more powerful than themselves. As a result, the "cuteness" index of a large, fat adult decreases.

  4. Whether obesity is attractive depends on the face

Actually, whether a child or an adult is attractive when fat mostly depends on their face. I secretly admit that my niece is prettier than me. Children can also be unattractive, and they remain unattractive even when they're fat. However, for a person, being fat as a child and being fat as an adult are different. Being fat as a child is cute, but being fat as an adult is unattractive. This is likely because they've "matured." Right after birth, children are all fresh and smooth, complete and perfect. But as time passes or as they encounter certain things, their faces might get wrinkles, or their legs might get scars, making them look unattractive. Of course, there are also many people who become more attractive with age.

  5. It's always the adults' fault if a child or an adult is fat

When people see a child getting fat, they blame the child's parents, "How can you feed him so much and make him so fat!" When they see an adult getting fat, they say, "How can you eat so much and get so fat!" So, whether it's an adult or a child who's fat, it's always the adults' fault, and the child is blameless. People don't blame children for getting fat, but they think it's unreasonable for an adult to be unable to control their weight. Some people say, "That's not fair!" No, it really is unfair. It's the child's privilege. Children are young and lack self-control, so if they can't control themselves and urinate in the street, people won't blame them too much. However, adults have a certain level of self-control, and if they do something out of control, people will think it's unacceptable.

Alright, at my age, I won't argue about cuteness with children anymore. They're cute, and that's what they deserve. The above five reasons are my irresponsible opinions. If anyone has other opinions, feel free to comment and discuss.
