Which body type is more attractive to men
Recently, a study by the University of Aberdeen published in the British Daily Mail found that men find thinner women more attractive, associating this body type with youth, fertility, and lower risk of illness.
Firstly, the researchers conducted theoretical analysis, suggesting that human aesthetics is highly related to the instinct of biological evolution. People find a woman's figure charming because evolution instinctively leads people to believe her survival rate and fertility rate are higher. Therefore, the researchers combined the relationship between obesity and mortality, as well as the relationship between obesity and fertility, to establish a corresponding mathematical model.
To validate the model, the research team surveyed more than 1,300 male and female volunteers from nine countries, asking respondents to rank a series of female silhouette images based on attractiveness. The researchers used body mass index (BMI) to represent the thinness or thickness of women, with the slimmer individuals having a lower BMI value. The results showed that all participants' rankings of the images were very similar, indicating a negative correlation between a woman's attractiveness and the degree of her obesity. In other words, people indeed find thinner women more charming.
When the researchers introduced the relationship between age and BMI into the mathematical model, they found that the optimal BMI range was between 17 and 20, which exactly corresponds to the body type observed to be the most attractive. The revised theoretical model well explains the psychological mechanism of valuing thinness—people generally consider the figures of the most charming women to perfectly match the BMI of young women who are expected to have the strongest future fertility and survival rates. This explains why the average BMI of cover girls and sexy actresses is between 17 and 20.
