Spanish folk story: stories of priests and donkeys
once upon a time, there was a priest who had a garden and a well in it.
the priest tied a donkey to the well and kept the donkey on the water truck day and night.
in order not to make donkeys lazy, the priest tied a copper bell in the water truck.
donkey turn, bell rings, donkey stops, ring.
as long as the bell cannot be heard, the priest comes from the window and squeals, forcing the donkey to continue pumping water.
one day, three boys passed the priest's house.
they were hungry, but they had no money in their pocket, and they decided to steal the priest's donkey.
but how can the priest not know and keep the bell ringing? after a long period of thinking, they finally came up with a great plan: to leave one person behind to pull a water truck for the donkey until the other two associates took it far away.
they did it.
the guy who stayed behind pulled the water truck all night, the bell was still ringing, and he was exhausted and had to stop.
the bell just stopped and the priest looked out the window.
when he looked at the donkey missing, he was in a water truck, in a state of shock, rushing to grab a big knife and running towards the wellhead.
poor young people were terrified, but he had already made up a set of words to deceive priests.
he said to the priest, "dear master, don't be surprised.
i'm your donkey.
twenty years ago, a terrible witch turned me into a donkey, and i should have dragged you for life, but i often prayed to god, who finally had mercy on me and turned me into a man.
let me go, good master." the priest listened to this, surprised.
he let the young man go, and commanded him to pray every day, and never become a donkey again.
the next day, the priest went to the street and tried to buy another donkey.
he came to the market and immediately discovered that his former donkey was being auctioned.
"i won't buy you, but don't lie to me! let someone who doesn't know you buy you!"
