Men with large waists are more likely to have a shorter lifespan

After middle age, it is important to pay attention to your waist circumference. According to a recent report by the British Daily Mail, researchers have warned that an excessive waist circumference can shorten life expectancy, affecting both men and women. The study found that after excluding factors such as body mass index (BMI), smoking, alcohol consumption, and exercise, individuals with a larger waist circumference had an increased risk of death from heart disease, respiratory diseases, and cancer. Compared to those with a smaller waist, people with a larger waist had a higher risk of early death.

Researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, USA, analyzed medical data from over 600,000 people in 11 studies and drew the above conclusion. They found that men with a waist circumference of over 109 centimeters (approximately 3 feet 3 inches) had a 50% higher risk of death compared to men with a waist circumference of less than 89 centimeters (approximately 2 feet 7 inches), equivalent to a 3-year reduction in life expectancy after the age of 40. Women with a waist circumference of over 94 centimeters (approximately 2 feet 8 inches) had an 80% higher risk of early death compared to women with a waist circumference of less than 69 centimeters (approximately 2 feet 1 inch), equivalent to a 5-year reduction in life expectancy after the age of 40. Additionally, the risk of early death increased linearly with waist circumference, with a 7% and 9% increase in death risk for men and women, respectively, for every 5 centimeter increase in waist circumference.

Dr. James, an epidemiologist at the Mayo Clinic, stated that BMI is not a good indicator because it cannot accurately reflect which part of the body is obese. He said that excess abdominal fat is often associated with diabetes and heart disease. The study was published in the "Mayo Clinic Proceedings," suggesting that doctors should consider both BMI and waist circumference to assess the risk of early death from obesity. Dr. James said, "The main goal is to prevent an excessive BMI and an overly large waist circumference. For those with a large waist, even a few centimeters reduction through exercise and diet can greatly benefit health."
