About half of newborns develop yellow staining of the skin and sclera white eyes 2 to 3 days after birth, which is called "neonatal jaundice."

Among them, 80 - 90% belong to normal physiological phenomena, that is, physiological jaundice. This yellow gangrene is most severe in the first 4 to 6 days after birth, gradually subsides on the seventh day, and disappears around the 15th day. Premature infants have severe gangrene and subsides slowly, sometimes lasting for up to 3 weeks. The main reason for its occurrence is that the liver function of the newborn is not perfect yet, and it is impossible to convert unconjugated bilirubin (indirect bilirubin) produced after the destruction of red blood cells into conjugated bilirubin (direct bilirubin) and be excreted from the body. Therefore, the amount of unconjugated bilirubin in the blood is high, resulting in jaundice. Generally, no special treatment is needed, and nursing can be appropriately done in advance to ensure that the neonatal meconium is discharged as soon as possible, which can help reduce the degree of gangrene; in addition, during the gangrene period, attention should be paid to giving enough sugar water and heat, and protecting the liver.

If the jaundice appears too early or disappears too late, or the degree of jaundice is too severe, or gradually alleviates and worsens, and the infant has clinical symptoms such as poor spirit, insufficient milk intake or refusal to milk, it is pathological jaundice and should be promptly treated. Hospital diagnosis and treatment.
