[Nobwandam] The beginning and end of the application for the "Gesar Epic Tradition"

The spring breeze has just arrived and the sky is still cold

There is nothing in the world, there is only one in the world, and it is a beautiful lotus flower.

Like rainbows in the sky, strange clouds outside the sky.

It is difficult to use boundless talents, so why do you need to borrow iron plates and red teeth, just face the mountains and snow, and sing from thousands of families? It is commendable that the heroic sons and daughters are the Fan King and the Tara Fairy Child.

Whether it is east, west, north, south, rain, dew, and sand.

Fighting the five hundred devils made Yuyu infinitely clear.

Looking around, you can see that the vast expanse of thousands of miles, the country of poetry and China.

The song "Ode to Gesar on the Phoenix Terrace Remembering the Blowing Xiao·Ode to Gesar" written by Professor Wang Yinuan has vividly sung the thousand-year epic "The Biography of King Gesar".

As early as 226 years ago, in 1776, the Russian scholar Paras also spoke highly of "The Legend of King Gesar" in his "Journey to the Provinces of the Russian Empire".

However, the German philosopher Hegel publicly declared in his masterpiece "Aesthetics" that "there is no epic in China." Just 100 years after Hegel's assertion, a French female traveler traveled alone across Eurasia and across the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to China's Kham District, which is today's Dege County, Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, and discovered The Biography of King Gesar was brought back to France for collation.

She was Alexander Davier.

David Neal was born in Paris in 1868.

His father was a scholar proficient in Greek philosophy and his mother was a devout Catholic.

But David Neal himself later became a Buddhist believer who practiced both overt and secret.

At the age of 15, he left home alone in the UK.

At the age of 17, he crossed the Gotthard Mountains alone with only a raincoat and a book to find Italian lakes.

She regarded exploration as her only hobby and vowed to make an expedition that surpassed her predecessors.

She has spent her life pursuing those "novel worlds" that are rarely known.

She lived to be one hundred and one years.

In her long life, except for difficulty in moving in her later years, she spent most of her time in foreign countries and on journeys.

She has been to more than 20 countries in the world, and stayed in the Far East for the longest, and the place that made her most nostalgic was the Kangzang Plateau in China.

She later wrote in her diary: "To be honest, I miss the place that is not my hometown.

The grasslands, deserts, snow that never melts all year round, and the blue and bright sky above it.

All these often haunt me.

The mind...

fascinated me." Driven by this sincere longing, she came to Tibetan areas in my country again and again.

She entered Tibet and Lhasa five times, and spent most of the rest of the time inspecting and studying Tibetan areas in Sichuan, Gansu and Qinghai provinces.

She was 75 years old in 1944, but she still visited Tibet again with great enthusiasm as when she was young.

She was wearing Tibetan clothes, spoke fluent Tibetan, and carried a Tsamba bag.

Except for those blue eyes, it is difficult for people to believe that she is actually a foreign old woman.

In her later years, she and her adopted son, Lama Yongdun, settled in Dinne, France, but she still missed the plateau that made her spend the best time of her life.

She has been looking forward to visiting her old place again.

Until a few days before her death, she had drawn up a travel plan to Beijing through Lhasa, through Sichuan, and Qinghai-Tibet regions.

She has lived in Tibetan areas for almost 20 years.

In 1931, she published her "The Life of Ridge Superman Gesar" in Paris, France, which attracted widespread attention from European scholars.

This is the first work to introduce Gesar to the Western public.

However, the attention and attention of scholars does not mean that "Gesar" has walked out of the snowy plateau and entered the world.

It only laid a favorable foundation for "Gesar" to go global.

For a long time,"Gesar" remained a mystery to the outside world.

Because before 1959,"Gesar" was only popular in mountain villages and pastoral areas in Tibetan areas.

In the cultural hinterland dominated by Buddhism, especially in areas where Yellow Religion was prevalent, it was still regarded as the "noise of beggars." This situation was not changed until after the founding of New China.

At the beginning of the founding of New China, Mao Dun, Zhou Yang, Lao She and others expressed their concern about "Gesar." In 1958, in order to welcome the 10th anniversary of the founding of New China, for the first time in history, the collection, sorting and rescue of "Gesar" was carried out in a planned and organized manner in the vast Tibetan areas.

In 1960, Chairman Mao personally met with Pajie, a Mongolian artist of "Geser", and commended him for his contribution to new socialist literature and art.

However, the erroneous thinking of "leftist" has caused "Gesar" and other undertakings in our country to suffer an unprecedented impact, and has been turned into a "big poisonous weed."

The first to realize the value of "Gesar" and feel that the spring of "Gesar" is quietly approaching were a group of veterans in my country's political and academic circles.

The Fourth Literary Congress, held from the end of October to mid-November 1979, was a grand meeting in the literary and artistic circles to set things right since the new era.

Therefore, it has been recorded in history as "an extremely important milestone" in the literary world.

At this meeting, Comrade Deng Xiaoping delivered a speech on behalf of the Central Committee and proposed the guidelines for literary and artistic work in the new era of socialist modernization, making this conference more of milestone significance.

Comrade Xiaoping said in his congratulatory speech: "Our literature and art belong to the people." "The people are the mother of literary and artistic workers.

The artistic life of all progressive literary and artistic workers lies in the flesh-and-blood connection between them and the people.

Forget, ignore or cut off this connection and artistic life will dry up.

People need art, and art needs people even more." Deng Xiaoping's message set the tone for this meeting and pointed out the direction for the future of China literature and art.

Zhou Yang, former deputy director of the Propaganda Department of the CPC Central Committee and a tycoon in the literary and art circles who came back after the Cultural Revolution, delivered a keynote speech at the meeting,"Carrying on the Past and Opening Up the Way to Prosperize Literature and Art in the New Era of Socialism." The report, which spans more than 20,000 words, provides a comprehensive summary of literature and art in the 30 years since the founding of the People's Republic of China, discusses the party's literature and art policies and several tasks for the development of literature and art in the new era, and is an important document in the history of literature and art.

At this meeting, with the initiative and support of Comrade Zhou Yang, and the appeal of scholars of the older generation such as Zhong Jingwen, Ma Xueliang, and Jia Zhi, we first rehabilitated "Gesar" and decided to carry out immediate rescue work.

Liu Xicheng, executive vice chairman of China Association for Democracy and People's Democratic People's Republic of China, said in an article devoted to the 100th anniversary of Comrade Zhou Yang's birth,"Zhou Yang is a pioneer in the collection and research of ethnic minority folk literature.

On July 17, 1958, the Propaganda Department of the CPC Central Committee held a symposium on compiling the history of ethnic minority literature.

At the meeting, Zhou Yang proposed to implement the plan of "three selections and one history" in ethnic minority areas, namely, selection of songs, selection of stories, selection of proverbs and history of literature.

After the meeting, the Propaganda Department of the CPC Central Committee forwarded the "Summary of the Symposium on the Compilation and Selection of the History of Ethnic Literature" to various places on August 15, creating a precedent for the collection and research of ethnic minority folk literature.

Since then, planned collection and research of ethnic minority folk literature began, including the collection and publication of ethnic epics such as the Tibetan epic "Gesar"."

"The Institute of Ethnic Literature of China Academy of Social Sciences was proposed by Messrs.

Ma Xueliang and Zhong Jingwen during the Cultural Congress in 1979, and agreed on the spot by Comrade Zhou Yang, and instructed the head of the Institute of Ethnic Studies and linguist Fu Maoji to be responsible for the preparation and establishment.

Therefore, Zhou Yang should be the well-deserved founder of the Institute of Ethnic Literature.

By January 1984, the Institute of Ethnic Literature of China Academy of Social Sciences held the fourth working conference on the Tibetan epic "Gesar".

Zhou Yang was pleased to be invited to deliver a speech." It can be seen that the older generation of Chinese literary and artistic circles represented by Comrade Zhou Yang have devoted a lot of effort to the prosperity and development of national culture.

In 1980, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and China Academy of Social Sciences held the first "Gesar" working conference in Sichuan.

At the meeting, the report focused on the situation of the Zaba elderly people's speeches compiled by Xizang Normal University and the Preparatory Group of the Autonomous Region Federation of Literary and Art Circles.

In 1983, when formulating the "Sixth Five-Year Plan" for national philosophy and social science work, the collection and collation of "Gesar" were included in the national key scientific research project for the first time.

In 1984, with the approval of the Propaganda Department of the CPC Central Committee, the Ministry of Culture, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, China Academy of Social Sciences and China Federation of Literary and Art Circles jointly formed the "Gesar" Work Leading Group to coordinate, organize and promote the "Gesar" work across the country.

In this way,"Gesar" finally historically came from behind the scenes to the stage.

"Once in a Millennium" Celebration Event

In 1985, in order to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the publication of Finland's heroic epic Kalevala, the "Academic Symposium on Kalevala and the World Epic" was successfully held under the auspices of UNESCO.

Our country sent a delegation to attend the meeting.

During the conference, the host of the conference, Professor Hang Ke, academic consultant of UNESCO, and President of the Finnish Literary Society, and Professor Haixi of the University of Bonn, a famous epic expert, specially talked to Mr.

Jia Zhi and Mr.

Jingbian Gyatso, saying that China has made great achievements in the collection and collation of ethnic epics, especially "Gesar." "Gesar" is a very distinctive epic, which we have learned very little about in the past.

You can apply to UNESCO for the activities of the Year of Gesar, which will promote your collection and collation work, and you can also introduce Gesar to academic circles around the world.

They also expressed their willingness to assist my government in the declaration process.

After returning to China, Lao Jia and Mr.

Jiangbian immediately reported to the leaders of the Academy of Social Sciences, as well as to Mr.

Zhong Jingwen and the leaders of the Association for Democracy and People's Livelihood.

They all thought this was a good thing, expressed their support, and would actively promote this matter.

Lao Zhong said that when we conduct research on "Gesar", we cannot be closed, but should be open.

If the application is successful, it will not only be a great promotion to the work of Gesar, but also a promotion to the epic research of all ethnic groups in our country and the entire folk literature work, which can improve the status and influence of the entire folk literature work in society.

After 1991, based on the history and current situation of the inheritance, spread and dissemination of epic traditions in multi-ethnic areas such as Mongolian, Tibetan, and Tu, the National Ge Office adopted the suggestions of some experts and scholars and renamed "Gesar".

It was renamed "Gesar".

1995 marks the 1000th anniversary of the birth of the heroic epic Manas of the Kyrgyz Republic.

UNESCO designated 1995 as the "Year of Manas".

At the same time, the Autonomous Republic of Buryatia of Russia solemnly held a celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the birth of the high-standard "Geser"(Gesar).

Experts from our country and various countries were invited to participate in the commemorative activities.

After returning from these activities, with the strong support of the leaders of the State and China Academy of Social Sciences, he also decided to bid for the "International Year of Georgia".

In 2001, the national "Ge" Office specifically drafted the application report and submitted it to the then competent department, the Ministry of Education.

In order to attract the attention of superiors, a copy of the report was handed over to Comrade Xia Zhu, then Director of the Department of Ethnic Education, who personally handed it to Comrade Chen Zhili, Minister of Education.

At the 31st UNESCO General Conference held in Paris on October 17, 2001, representatives from more than 140 countries and regions attending the conference unanimously passed a resolution to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of the great writer Hugo, the 550th anniversary of the birth of Leonardo da Vinci, and the 300th anniversary of the founding of St.

Petersburg, Russia.

47 projects around the world, including the thousandth anniversary of my country's epic "Gus", were included in the list of anniversaries in which UNESCO participated from 2002 to 2003.

"Gus" is the only item my country has included on this list.

In order to actively cooperate with this cultural event, a variety of commemorative activities were held in Beijing, Xizang, Qinghai, Gansu, Sichuan and other places.

As a prelude to the millennium commemoration activities, a grand commemorative meeting was held in the Great Hall of the People on July 18, 2002.

Relevant leaders of the party and state and officials from UNESCO attended the meeting and delivered speeches.

Li Tieying, then member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and President of China Academy of Social Sciences, delivered a keynote speech on "Cultural Innovation and Innovative Culture" at the commemorative meeting.

He said that when we commemorate this great poem, we must not only review her profound and broad ideological connotations and share her timeless artistic charm, but more importantly, we must think about how to view the traditional culture of the Chinese nation and how the traditional culture of the Chinese nation Keep pace with the times and innovate.

On May 10, 2004, the "Epic" Gesus "Millennium Commemorative Variety Gala" was held in the auditorium of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

Raidi, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, Chen Kuiyuan, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and President of the China Academy of Social Sciences, and other party and state leaders attended the meeting to congratulate and delivered speeches.

"Lingzhong" embarks on the road of "applying for cultural heritage"

Since 2001, my country has applied for the "Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage Project of Humanity" to UNESCO.

Kunqu Opera, Guqin, Xinjiang's Twelve Muqam, and Mongolian Long Diao have successfully entered the "list".

"Gesar", also known as "Lingzhong" in Tibetan, is a long oral narrative poem spread among Tibetan, Mongolian, Tu and other ethnic groups, representing the highest achievements of the folk culture of Xizang.

The achievements made in the rescue, collation and protection of "Gesar" have become an example of promoting our party's ethnic policies and our government's efforts to vigorously strengthen Tibetan cultural construction.

In 2004, the third batch of "Representative List of Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity" was about to be applied.

Due to nearly half a century of accumulation, the work of "Gesus" has been generally recognized and affirmed by the international community.

In view of this, the Institute of Ethnic Literature of the China Academy of Social Sciences and the Office of the National "Gesus" Work Leading Group decided to join the Tibet Autonomous Region Academy of Social Sciences, The Ethnic Affairs Committee of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and others jointly declared "Gesus" to UNESCO as a "Representative List of Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity." In early June, the Institute of Ethnic Literature immediately established a research group for the application of cultural relics.

The members of the research group are composed of experts with senior professional titles and scholars with doctoral degrees or above.

Among them are experts who have been engaged in the research of "Gesus" for a long time and scholars with expertise in epic theory.

The main work of the entire application is to prepare relevant materials for the application, including nearly 40 pages of table text, 10 minutes of video materials for the application, 10 photos of the application materials, as well as 2 hours of supplementary video files and 30 pictures, etc., in two Chinese and English.

As required, all texts will be completed by the end of June and submitted to the External Relations Bureau of the Ministry of Culture.

All the members of the research team were unsure of completing such an arduous task in just one month.

The research team found that due to the gap in expression, only understanding the requirements of the English declaration form according to the expression on the Chinese form will cause errors to more or less.

Therefore, the interpretation of the English original of the application form is crucial.

Therefore, the research team specifically understood and analyzed the content requirements of the original English text item by item, and then decided to apply under the name of the project,"Gothic Artists and Their Rap Tradition", and then assigned the copywriting task to the research team members.

Each research team member is responsible for one or two items.

Due to the hard work of all members of the research team day and night, and the fact that all of the elite officers of the institute were recruited, the text work went smoothly, and Yangyang's English text of more than 40 pages and more than 30,000 words was completed as scheduled.

However, there are still several major tasks that have not yet made any progress, that is, the 10-minute video file, the 2-hour video material and the authorization letter from the inheritor of "Gesus", and these materials all require the cooperation of "Gesus" artists.

In particular, video materials for the application for cultural heritage have high requirements in terms of image quality and production technology.

The video data we keep in our hands are not satisfactory, so we must produce qualified video data within a limited time.

During the intense preparation work, we contacted a company that specialized in filming the "Gasus" documentary a year ago.

They have a large number of high-quality video materials of "Gasus" and its artists.

After discussion, the company leaders readily agreed to our request and agreed to help us produce these two video files.Since one of the main requirements of the application materials is that the project applied for must be endangered and in urgent need of protection, in addition to the text, the endangered content must also be expressed in the video.

Later, UNESCO divided the application projects into a list of representative works and a list of urgently needed protection.

Twenty days later, the video file was produced.

This is a high-quality and shocking presentation of the application.

It not only comprehensively and vividly expresses the performance styles of various "Gasus" artists, but also reflects the challenges faced by the epic "Gasus" in modern society.

The application work was proceeding in an intense and orderly manner.

By the time all the documents were prepared, it was already past 7 p.m.

on June 29, and there were still a few hours before the deadline for accepting application materials.

It was not until now that all the research team members finally breathed a sigh of relief.

Despite this, our work is only the first step in the long march of thousands of miles.

At that time, UNESCO stipulated that the application for cultural relics should be carried out every two years, and member states could only apply one or two at a time.

At that time, three projects, including the Twelve Muqam in Xinjiang, the Mongolian Long Diao and the "Gesas", were declared at the same time, but my country could only recommend two projects to the United Nations at most.

At that time, the most powerful competitor for "Gesus" was the Twelve Muqam.

In order to win admission to UNESCO, on July 7, 2004, Professor Yang Enhong, then director of the Office of the National Leading Group for the Work of "Gesus", went to Beijing Hospital to report to Comrade Raidi, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.

The rescue work of "Gesus" and the ongoing application work.

After carefully listening to the report, Vice Chairman Raidi gave important instructions on Gesar's work: "The Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and Norbulingka have been included in the World Cultural Heritage List.

Similarly,"Gasus" is a very important intangible cultural heritage.

Although they have different forms of expression, the former can be seen and touched, and the latter is sung orally, they are both crystallization of the wisdom of the Tibetan nation and invaluable treasures passed down by our ancestors." He also said,"The thousandth anniversary of" Gus "has been included in UNESCO's 2002-2003 anniversary list.

This is the first step we have taken.

To declare intangible cultural heritage, this is the second step, we must take this second step well." In July of the same year, Professor Yang Enhong, Dr.

Nobwangdan and others went to the Tibetan pastoral areas for investigation and visited Maqu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu Province, and gave an academic report on the culture of "Gesas 'er" to employees in the county in Maqu County.

Unexpectedly, at the end of the meeting, the audience asked the speaker the most questions about the application of "Gesas' er".

It can be seen that the application of "Gesas 'er" touched the hearts of all the people who love this epic.

In the same year, the Office of the National Leading Group for the Work of "Gesas" reported to the central leadership the importance of the application for the cultural heritage of "Gesas".

State Councilor Comrade Chen Zhili personally approved it and instructed that attention should be paid to the application for the cultural heritage of "Gesas".

work.

Nold and others, members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, also submitted proposals to the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, suggesting that relevant state departments declare the Tibetan epic "Gesus" as a representative work of human intangible cultural heritage, so that this excellent Tibetan national cultural treasure can be better passed down.

Soon, I received a reply from the Ministry of Culture and relevant state departments.

All this gave all members of the research team full of hope for the success of this application.

However, more than a year later, in November 2005, UNESCO announced the list of projects that had entered the "Directory", but "Gesus" was not included in the list.

As a result, we learned that in order to weigh the interests of all parties,"Gesus" was not included in the two projects recommended by our government to UNESCO.

Dreams come true in spring and autumn

The setback in the application of "Gesus" did not bring any mental pressure to the members of the research team.

On the contrary, they regrouped and began to face another challenge that was coming: applying for the "first batch of national intangible cultural heritage Representative List".

Due to the solid textual foundation, the application for the national list was easily passed.

Everyone feels that retreating into advancing in the face of challenges is an important tactic.

Since 2005, in accordance with the spirit of the Convention, UNESCO has made adjustments to the application for cultural heritage.

In this way, until July 2008, the application for the cultural heritage of "Gus" was once again put on the agenda.

At that time, a national mobilization meeting for the application of cultural relics was held at the Foreign Experts Building in Beijing.

The meeting explained the application process, requirements and precautions, and learned that my country planned to apply for 35 projects this time.

Zhang Qingshan, President of China Academy of Art, said: Because UNESCO has no limit on the number of member states to declare this time, my country uses South Korea, India and Japan as comparisons to strive to demonstrate my country's style as a cultural power.

In early September 2008, the Institute of Ethnic Literature of China Academy of Social Sciences and the Office of the National Leading Group for the Work of "Gesus" decided to reorganize the research group and apply for "Gesus" as a "Representative List of Human Intangible Cultural Heritage".

Professor Chao Gejin, director of the Institute of Ethnic Literature, served as the leader of the research group.

The Institute of Ethnic Literature provided the necessary work funds in the early stage, and then the research team applied for funds to the President of the Academy of Social Sciences.

The leaders of the institute were extremely concerned about this and quickly allocated the required funds.

In this way, the research team immediately started the preparation of the application for the heritage.

work.

Compared with four years ago, there are new changes in the application work.

First, the content and number of words in the application text have been reduced, but the requirements are higher; second, the application project is divided into two parts, divided into a list of representative works and projects in urgent need of protection.

Third, UNESCO will not limit the number of heritage applications from member states this time, but it will take several years to wait once this opportunity is lost.

In response to this requirement, the research team changed the original application name to "Gesar Epic Tradition", decided to apply for the "Representative Works List", and decided that the Chinese copy should be written separately by everyone.

The English text should be drafted by Professor Bamoqubumo, and Professor Yin Hubin and Dr.

Li Lianrong drafted the Chinese text.

Everyone carefully carved the text to achieve beautiful text, accurate expression, and comprehensive content, striving to achieve one-time review and approval.

In addition, some modifications have been made to the video file, and the content that originally reflected the endangered situation has been deleted as necessary.

The Ministry of Culture requires that all application materials be submitted to the External Relations Bureau of the Ministry of Culture and the China Non-Heritage Protection Center, which are responsible for the application, before midnight on September 29.

At 7 p.m.

on the 29th, all document preparation work entered the countdown stage.

Director Chao Gejin also dragged his sick body to the scene to conduct the final review of the Chinese and English texts.

At about 8 p.m., all the work was successfully completed.

Director Chao happily invited all members of the research team to dinner, and also sent people to deliver the text materials to the External Relations Bureau and the Intangible Cultural Heritage Center overnight.

In mid-October, China Academy of Art and the Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center jointly held an expert committee meeting to review the declared projects one by one.

At the meeting, the expert committee fully affirmed the textual materials of the "Gesus Epic Tradition" and also raised whether the project name could be changed to "Gesus Epic" instead of "Gesus Epic Tradition".

However, since the research team emphasizes the oral narrative tradition of epic rather than just the text itself, the research team insists that the title number should not be used for the names of the application projects.

In addition, Professor Qi Qingfu proposed that the ownership of "Gesas 'er" should be clarified, clearly stating that "Gesas' er" originated in Tibetan areas and later spread to Mongolian, Tu and other areas to avoid causing errors in understanding.

At this meeting, Dean Zhang Qingshan said excitedly,"This time we must launch" Gus Saar "and strive to successfully declare it, otherwise we will not be able to explain it to the people in the Mongolian and Tibetan regions!"

On October 30, 2008, the UNESCO Secretariat sent a letter to Dr.

Nobwangdan, the liaison person for the "Gazus Epic Tradition" heritage application project, requesting that supplementary materials be needed for the application text.

The letter states that in the first paragraph, item 4,"Geographical Location and Scope of Heritage" of the application form, it is mentioned that "Gus" is also spread in Baltistan in Pakistan, Ladakh in India, Bhutan, Outer Mongolia, Kalmykia, the Republic of Buryatia and other countries and regions other than China.

Please explain the specific distribution scope and existence methods of overseas spread.

At the end of November, the External Relations Bureau of the Ministry of Culture and the China Academy of Art co-chaired the second work meeting on the application for cultural relics.

At the meeting, the revision opinions of various projects proposed by UNESCO were studied and supplemented.

The supplementary opinions we put forward were unanimously affirmed by the experts attending the meeting.

On January 8, 2009, Nobwandam received another letter from UNESCO, which stated:

Dr.

Nobwandam:

The report and annexes submitted by China on the application of the "Gazus Epic Tradition" for the "Representative List of Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity" were received on December 10, 2008 and are now being accepted.

It will be forwarded to a subsidiary body established by the Intergovernmental Committee for review, which will hold a closed session from May 11 to 15, 2009, and you will be informed of their opinions later.

Based on the advice of the subsidiary body, the Intergovernmental Committee will decide whether to include it on the list at its fourth meeting, to be held from September 28 to October 2, 2009.

Please accept my lofty respects

Sesri Duwile, Director of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Department

The exciting news finally arrived.

In early June 2009, Nobwangtan received review opinions from the intergovernmental subsidiary bodies established by UNESCO, as follows:

Draft resolution xxxx nominates Committee No.

00204:

Regarding the following description of the "Gazus Epic Tradition" nominated by China for the "Representative List of Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity":

1.

The story of "Gesar", which is commonly spread among the Tibetan, Mongolian and Tu communities in northwest China, is based on the outstanding oral artistic talents of generations of artists in a mixed and poetic manner.

It tells the heroic story of King Gesar who devoted himself to the lower realm to save the lives, led the people of Lingguo to subjugate the demons, suppress the strong and support the weak, and returned to heaven after completing their mission in the world.

In Tibetan areas, epic artists sing songs with costumes and props such as hats and bronze mirrors.

Mongolian epic artists are mostly passed down from master to apprentice.

When singing, they often use horse-head qin or Sihu accompaniment, integrating the storytelling style of Haolaibao and the book story.

The singing of the epic is embedded in the religion and daily life of the community along with unique ritual practices such as smoke festivals, meditation, and immersion, such as singing the passage of King Gesar's birth from heaven at the birth ceremony.

Numerous myths, legends, ballads, proverbs, etc.

not only become part of tradition and become entertainment in rural communities, but also play a role in teaching history, religion, customs, morality and science to listeners.

The emergence and development of Gesar Thangka and Tibetan opera have continuously strengthened people's cultural identity and sense of historical continuity, especially the younger generation.

2.

It is hereby submitted that the "Epic Tradition of Gesus" in nomination document No.

00204 meets the conditions of the representative works list.

The resolutions are as follows:

1)It describes in detail the spread of the "Gazus Epic Tradition" from generation to generation, and at the same time, this heritage has given several minority communities a sense of identity and continuity.

2)The inclusion of the "Gazus Epic Tradition" in the representative list will help ensure the visibility of intangible cultural heritage and promote respect for cultural diversity and human creativity.

3)The nominations describe measures to be taken to strengthen the protection of cultural spaces for epic learning and recitation, including focusing on research and dissemination.

4)It is believed that the community participated voluntarily and freely in the nomination process.

5)This heritage is included in the "National Intangible Cultural Heritage List" managed by the Intangible Cultural Heritage Department of the Ministry of Culture.

3.

The "Gazus Epic Tradition" is included in the "Representative List of Human Intangible Cultural Heritage".

At this point, the tone of the application has basically been set, and we will wait for the final good news.

On September 30, 2009, on the eve of the 60th anniversary of the birth of the People's Republic of China, Xinhua Agency received good news.

At the fourth meeting of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage held in Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates, from September 26 to 28, my country's "Gazi Epic Tradition" was approved to be included in the "Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity." At this meeting, after a three-day discussion, more than 400 representatives from 114 countries and regions around the world determined that 76 projects from around the world were selected into the "Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity" and the "Intangible Cultural Heritage in Urgent Need of Protection" List ", of which my country accounted for 25 items.

So far, my country's government, relevant institutions, experts and scholars have taken five years to coordinate the efforts of all parties, carefully prepare documents, work day and night, and the application of the "Gothic Epic Tradition", which has been widely concerned by all sectors of society, has finally reached a satisfactory conclusion.
