Vitamin C supplementation in obese people can protect their hearts
A new study by the University of Colorado at Boulder found that daily vitamin C supplementation for obese people can also achieve the same "heart-protecting" effect as walking.
Researchers have found that a protein called "Endothelial Vasotenin-1"(ET-1) is very active in the blood of overweight and obese adults, which causes blood vessels to contract and become less adaptable to changes in blood flow., thereby making it susceptible to vascular disease. The researchers followed 35 overweight or obese adults who were inactive for three months. Among them, 20 took vitamin C supplements every day, and the other 15 took aerobic exercise every day. It was found that daily intake of 500 mg of vitamin C supplements reduced ET-1-related vasoconstriction as well as exercise, and vitamin C supplements also appear to be an effective strategy to help reduce ET-1-mediated vasoconstriction in overweight and obese people.
The researchers said the research results may help in the later development of new exercise alternative therapies to improve individual health. Relevant agencies in the United States and the United Kingdom have given guidance standards for vitamin C intake. For example, the National Institutes of Health recommends that adult men and women need to consume 90 mg and 75 mg of vitamin C respectively per day. The reference intake of dietary nutrients for Chinese residents recommends that adults consume 100 mg of vitamin C every day. Excessive intake of vitamin C may cause discomfort.
