Appling, 56, is a professor of reproductive biomedicine at the University of Manchester in the UK.

In 1996, he encountered an accident while climbing a mountain in the Peak District with his sons Daniel and Matthew. The accident caused Appling to fracture three vertebrae, wrist, part of ribs, fingers and toes, and the broken bones also penetrated her lungs. The doctor feared that he would never stand up again. After six weeks of hospitalization, Appling was discharged from the hospital and relied on a walking aid to walk. To help his recovery, he began practicing yoga.

Before the injury, Appling was a yoga enthusiast and had taken yoga classes.

Appling did not tell orthopedic experts about her self-created yoga rehabilitation plan. He initially used chairs and walls as supports, tried to do some simple yoga movements, wrote down the results of the previous day's practice the next day, and then improved the daily practice content based on the record.

"Overall, my approach is the right one," said Appling. I feel so happy every time I do new movements, such as standing and touching the ground with my hands." Yoga practice gradually yielded results. Appling began to be able to go up and down stairs and ride a bicycle. These landmark developments have given him a boost of confidence. Twelve years later, Appling has recovered as healthy as before the injury. Last year he went to Italy to climb Mount Dolomiti and also participated in the 10-kilometer race at the Manchester Athletics Championships.

A study published in 2005 showed that people with back pain who practice yoga are more comfortable performing daily activities, less painful and require fewer painkillers.

Yoga is an exercise that stretches the body and strengthens the muscles. Relaxation improves circulation and reduces muscle pain."

When the British Campaign for Arthritis learned that Aplin's own yoga movements had helped heal the body, it invited him to help lead a study on the use of yoga to treat back pain. Mike "Every rehabilitation requires stretching muscles to increase muscle strength and endurance," Hurley said. (Internship Editor: Wu Jinyu)
