A new study finds that practicing yoga is easier to relieve chronic low back pain (CLBP) and depression than conventional methods.

Researchers from the University of West Virginia randomly selected 90 people to conduct the experiment, yoga (43 cases) or a control group (47 cases). Subjects in the study were recruited through self-recommendation and were surveyed using the Oswestry Dysfunction Questionnaire, Visual Analog Scale, Beck Depression Scale, and painkillers after 12, 24, and 48 weeks of intervention.

Researchers found that after 24 weeks of yoga, patients experienced a significant reduction in pain levels. Yoga exercisers showed significant clinical improvements after 12 and 24 weeks. In addition, depression has also improved and the use of painkillers has been greatly reduced. The study was published online in the September 1, 2009 issue of the Journal of Spine Issues.

Dr. Kimberly Williams and colleagues in the Department of Social Medicine said: "Yoga improves physical function, reduces pain intensity, and improves depression in adults. In addition, the yoga group reduced the use of painkillers."

Iyengar Yoga is a unique style of yoga system formed by the famous Indian yoga master B.K. S Iyengar, who is now 91 years old. During the teaching process, Iyengar is good at using figurative metaphors, allowing many beginners to quickly break through the obstacles in practice and experience the mystery of yoga.
